Maximum Mayhem!

Norfolk & Suffolk Junior Motorcycle Club held round 6 of the championship at their home track just outside Great Hockham. The meeting was sponsored by Wordingham Plant Hire. Despite a downpour the previous night which threatened to spoil the hard work of Tim Watling and his crew, the track stood the test and provided a fantastic days racing.

The Autos began the day with James Dutton recording a maximum, closely followed by Jake Barsby and Calum Mitchell. Louis Thomas’ nonchalant air gave him a seventh position, while Freddie Bond suffered at the hands of mechanical gremlins during practice meaning he had to resort to his spare bike. Thomas Davey took 3 fifths and Fred Clements rounded out the group in 9th.

Kane “King” Fisher continued the trend with another maximum in the 65s. Ryan Vickers claimed second as he struggles to regain his pre-injury form. Jack Youngs (on the promise of a new 85) tasted the bottom step of the podium and on his recent form will surely be there again in the future. In the second heat of the day Max Bickers and Harvey Thomas just touched in mid-air, causing the latter to tumble heavily, but he soon picked himself up and salvaged some points. In the final heat of the day, while challenging for third, Bickers was the unfortunate one when he went down in a sandy corner after colliding with Matt Riches. In his last 2 laps he made up several places as he gritted his teeth and nailed the throttle in frustration. Kyle Wilby DNF’d the first race after suffering carburetion problems. Charlie Reeve, in his first season, started the day with a 5th but was unable to repeat the performance, ending up in 14th. Connor Bunkle, having run out of petrol in practice (schoolboy error by the pit crew!!) hung on by the skin of his teeth and claimed the final trophy spot, having had 2 tremendous race-long tussles with Ashley Rudd.

Yet another maximum was recorded by Ben Cole in the 85 SW, followed by Tyler Gray in second and George Ellis in third. Declan Whittles steady 3rd place finishes were undone by a poor result in the last heat resulting in him finishing 6th overall. Ryan Smith had a day to remember, hitting a round 100 points and ending up 7th, just 1 point ahead of Albert Van Dyke. Emma Richards applied the pressure to Phil Price all day finishing 11th and 12th respectively while Thomas George picked up 10th. Jay Hillier finished ahead of Lewis Holmes and William Van Dyke, after they DNS’d a race each.

Taking nothing away from him, David Kemp nevertheless let the scoresheets look untidy as he allowed Shaun Southgate to run away with the first race, before Kemp stamped his authority on the next 2 outings, therefore being the only 1st place overall finisher not to score a maximum. Southgate’s existing knee ligament damage appeared not to slow him down but he was unable to repeat his earlier win. Robert Hales, Kieran Snowling and Ben Watling left their friendship in the pits and battled hard with each other for 3rd, 4th & 5th. Harry Hedges-Staines and Will Nice tied on points at the end of the day with Harry claiming 8th ahead of Will. Sam Boydell missed out on a trophy by just 1 point after making life difficult for himself by dropping his bike while having a lonely ride and allowing 5 riders past him before getting going again. Both Downes brothers DNF’d the last race, Charlie with a leg injury and a trip to the ambulance to end his day.

Harry Noakes set the Schoolboy class race pace and was untouchable. Despite the best efforts of Will Beevor and George Foames he claimed another of the day’s maximums. James Bennett, 4th, has improved over the season and is looking to follow in his fathers wheeltracks. Daniel Kemp took 6th after tying with Will King, 7th. Barnaby Bendall, 12th, also tied with Harley Moss, 13th. Rhys Loram (son of Speedway star Mark) took 14th. Ben Henderson finished 19th with his sister Stacey not far behind in 22nd.

Last maximum of the day went to Paul Bennett in the Adults. The veteran won by a large margin from Mark Rudd
