Race report: Johnny Bunkle. Pictures Tracey Hales.

Sunday 6th July saw Norfolk & Suffolk Junior Motorcycle Club host another meeting in Thetford Forest at the Great Hockham venue. Forecast heavy showers failed to materialise, though the odd sprinkle did lay the dust, on a track manicured to perfection by Tim Watling.

In the Autos Jake Barsby commanded all three races, finishing with another maximum. Race 1 holeshot went to Louis Thomas, while Freddie Bond, Reece Martin & Fred Clements traded places throughout the day.

Kane Fisher went home with the 1st place trophy for the 65s, and continued his great vein of form, surprising his father, who said that with the return of Ryan Vickers from injury, and the addition of Tyler Holland, Kane had “exceeded” his expectations. Kane looked to be riding totally within his capabilities, having won the 2 earlier races and was showing no signs of being on the edge, charging through to 4th despite a crash at the first corner in the final race. Josh Bryenton had a nasty accident on the last lap, cartwheeling down the track. While Ashley Rudd got caught in backmarkers trying to make a pass on Connor Bunkle, who made the right decision to square off a corner and dive underneath all three. Jack Youngs rode consistently throughout the day to finish 7th, tied on points with 6th place Danny Mell.

Declan Whittle won the first Small Wheel race, while overall winner Ben Cole picked himself up from a first corner wipe-out to finish 4th. He lost a fantastic race long battle with Lewis Holland and had the grace to compliment Lewis on his win. Cole got the better of Holland in the finale. Connor Mountain has made the unusual decision to upgrade from the 65s halfway through the season. As he has grown too big for his 65 but is a tad short for the RM85 his father was seen carrying a specially patented starting block, courtesy of CTM Engineering, which did seem to help his starts as he finished the day just outside the top 10, not far behind Ryan Smith and Ryan O’Sullivan. Ryan O’ had a subdued day after a monster crash over the finish line jump nearly wiped out the spectators and knocked his confidence. Jay Hillier had a consistent day, finishing just behind Phil Price.

In the Big Wheels David Kemp stamped his authority with another maximum. Shaun Southgate took three 2nds, while Luke Parker and Robert Hales were 3rd and 4th respectively. Birthday boy Ben Watling finished in 10th. The racing in this group was frenetic as usual and the day ended with 4 pairs of riders tied on points.

Bruno van Dyke took the honours in the schoolboys and looked untouchable all day. The only rider to come close was Will Beevor, in race 3, but his earlier 25th place finish, due to a crash, put paid to any hopes of glory. Joe Scillitoe blew his KX125 in practice and suffered a puncture on a borrowed bike in the second outing. Stacey Henderson battled hard against the boys all day until the last race, where she dropped it in deep sand and lost several places after being tagged by another rider. The Goggins lads both took home a trophy, 2nd was Dean and Joe 6th. Tristan Hales took a nasty knock in race 1 and, joined by Blake Basey-Fisher, was unable to participate in the rest of the days events.

The Adult group was won in style by Paul Bennett, followed by Mark Rudd, David & John Bavin, and Mark Bunning. Back on the scene this week was Shane Whittle, who wasn’t as rusty as his opponents may have wished, though he made things hard for himself by stalling on the line in the final encounter. As usual, the newly healthy, Mark Secker battled hard with Justin Green for last place, and Chris Riches failed to start the last race of the day as his Honda boiled over waiting for the gate to drop.
